We sculpt in many materials including wood, metal, willow, foam, recycled materials, mod roc and fibreglass. As part of our team we are lucky enough to have Chris Wood of Wood Art Works to lead our sculpture projects. Chris is an artist and craftsman, skilled in a broad range of materials and techniques including - carving, chainsaw sculpture, welding, living willow and bodging. Commissions can vary from small, short-term projects to giant works of public art.
Our mosaic work incorporates ceramic tiles, italian smalti, glass, metalwork, stone, slate and fired clay. By its nature mosaic design is very workshop friendly and always proves popular. In short sessions small-scale objects, such as plaques, coasters and ornaments can easily be created. Larger panels and murals can be produced over periods of a few days to a few months. Mosaic tiles are perfect for both indoor and outdoor projects and will last for years. We run sessions suitable for all skill levels, from simple clay tile construction to intricate, hand cut tile designs.
Bespoke Arts and Crafts Our space is crammed full of every imaginable art and craft material. We are constantly striving to develop new techniques and ideas for workshops (ie. we play a lot!). We can plan a workshop to suit any situation, regardless of age, ability, location timescale etc. Here’s a list of the type of craft workshops we run: Paper mache, willow, junk Instruments, kites, jewellery, painting, drawing, illustration, design, screen printing, tie-dye, fabric painting, batik, mosaic, clay, masks, mod roc sculpture, vinyl decoration, lantern making, collage, flag making, set design, prop-making.
Painting with light or ‘light drawing’ is a magical technique. (you may know the technique from the ‘TalkTalk’ adverts for the X-Factor) We use long-exposure photography to capture the trails of light created by drawing in the air with torches. After each photograph the results can instantly be seen on a computer monitor. Amazing individual images can be captured or sequences of images can be edited together to create animated films. The flexibility of the technique makes it suitable as a project for any group regardless of ability or age. We have recently completed short films for the SPARK project in Newport and the Womad Beyond festival in Abu Dhabi. Our galleries show may other examples of individual images created in our workshops.
Malarky’s talented artists are experienced in a wide variety of materials and styles.   We are often commissioned to support urban regeneration projects, transforming drab  environments with positive, vibrant designs. A mural can be created over over a few hours or a few weeks. We help participants to develop their ideas and technical skills to produce professional finished designs. Our ‘graffiti’ or aerosol art workshops are always popular. Using aerosols is a great way of quickly producing modern, large-scale murals which will last for years. We promote a positive approach to ‘graffiti’ as a contemporary artform which is used across the world to produce beautiful designs in the urban environment. We also like to use acrylics, paint markers, paper, vinyl and collage to produce murals. The breadth of our experience allows us to employ techniques suitable for the age and ability of each group we work with, from nursery children to senior citizens.
We love parades! Over 13 years we have worked with thousands of participants to develop amazing creations for hundreds of community parades. In our slideshow you can see the results of our work on carnivals in Spain, Gran Canaria, the United Arab Emirates and across the South Wales valleys. Much of our time is spent developing new workshop ideas for masks, carnival giants, costumes and flags. Whether it’s a short or long term project we are able to work with groups of any age or ability to help them create spectacular costumes . In our arts workshop we also have over 30 giants, including dragons, butterflies, herons and caterpillars available for hire for your event. During the cold winter months we turn our focus to lantern parades. We are experts at traditional willow lantern-making. We have also designed new methods using laminates and LED lights which are safe, beautiful and easy to make. A winter giant is a great addition to any parade. We have a range of illuminated giant puppets available for hire or can help your group design one from scratch.
